FISH PASSAGE AND
FLOODGATES RESEARCH
We have been researching fish passage through three different types of floodgates on the Coquitlam River in ƛ̓éxÉ™tÉ™m Regional Park (formerly Colony Farm Regional Park). This multi-year study compares an innovative self-regulating floodgate (the only one in the Lower Mainland) with a typical top mounted floodgate and a side mounted gate using Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags and antennas. The PIT tags and antennas lets us track individual salmon's success in passing at the floodgates to crucial upstream habitat.
The research is being done in partnership with UBC Pacific Salmon Lab (Study Lead), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), and Metro Vancouver Parks. This video from July 2024 shares preliminary results presented by study lead, Zachary Sherker.
